Wild ‘N Out – The New Generation’s In Living Color

There have been episodes that have turned to events.

When Chance The Rapper came to the show it was reminiscent of when Kanye West came to the Wild ’N Out stage, both received multiple Grammy awards and it was truly a great moment.

With Chance’s episode there was just an electric energy and that turned into an hour special.

With the Season 11 premiere Nick was able to revisit his childhood & his Nickelodeon beginnings where there was an All That Takeover including SNL’s Kenan Thompson surprise entrance.

Some critics have said that rap music has turned from rapping about selling drugs to them expressing how they take the drugs.

The problem is when people write off hip hop’s history with drugs as just a product of ‘mumble rap’.

Yes it’s true that early records like Grandmaster Flash’s The Message were cultural conscious this was also when many thought of cocaine as a party drug which gave way to ‘ready rock’ or ‘crack’.

I feel this is the same with ecstasy or better know in the community as molly.

Historically this was also seen as a party drug and now it’s moved from the clubs to the hip hop airwaves.

Many top tier artists are moving from just physical discs to digital content.

This is no longer the days of old where boy band acts and pop princesses would battle over who can sell a million copies in a week.

With piracy fears and record sales decreasing there is more of a reliance on streaming. 

According to Bloomberg Technology U.S. streaming revenue accounted for almost half of the music industry’s sales.

 

In a singles dominated market fans are expecting faster releases and engulfing experiences.

There has been a shift. 

In the era of Method Man and The Firm, legendary group and Grammy nominated Cross Movement was dismissed by the mainstream as lame and who are only trying to criticize.

Lecrae had to battle that stigma as well but after becoming a multi Grammy winner and Anomaly went God independently he signed with Columbia.

His Reach Records' artist Andy Mineo has a friendship with Sway and has been featured on RapFix and Sway's Universe.

Hailing from Chatham’s 79th Street Chance The Rapper, born Chancellor Bennett, has had quite a run of success and it is more impressive when taking in the fact that he has accomplished so much without assistance of a major label.

 

After going on tour with Childish Gambino and with the release of his widely successful mixtape Acid Rap he stereotypically would have signed to one of the many labels that were courting him but instead he started his own path by remaining unsigned.
